Here's How We Help You Find the Right Hearing Aid

A quick guide on how the hearing aid buying process works.

  • About you

At your first appointment we will discuss your hearing loss, how long you've had it, how is it impacting your life, everyday problems you have with hearing, and so on. It's also good to discuss your day-to-day life a bit, so we know what kind of environments you want to be able to hear in - for example, are you at home most of the time or do you work in a noisy office? We also look at what type of hearing aid you would like to wear, what you will feel comfortable wearing and of course what is within your price range.

  • Hearing Test

Also at your first appointment we will do a hearing test to determine how bad your hearing loss is. The test is very simple and quick, you wear a small pair of headphones and hold a button in your hand - we play a sequence of noises into each ear and you press the button when you hear one. The test usually takes about ten minutes and from that we can determine how powerful a hearing aid you will need and what type/shape of aid would be suitable for you.

  • Fitting a Hearing Aid

Depending on how bad your hearing is, we may need to take an impression of the inside of your ear and send it off to create a custom-fit ear piece - this is done by squirting some putty into your ear, waiting for it to go hard and then taking it out, this is quick and painless but the putty is a little cold in the ear! For hearing losses that are not so bad we can fit you with a standard round ear piece on the day. We then programme the hearing aids based on your hearing test results and you try them on, whilst you are still in the practice we can make some initial adjustments based on what you are hearing. Many people find new hearing aids too loud, because they are not used to hearing everything, and for this reason we usually initally set them to be quitier than they need to be to start with.

  • Trial Period

We understand that purchasing a hearing aid is a big decision. Once we've fitted the aid there is a trial period in which you are free to take the hearing aids home and use them in your everyday environments before making a decision. It is important that you come back to see us at least a couple of times during the trial period so that we can tweak the hearing aids based on your experience and feedback. You will be surprised how much we can alter the sound that you hear through the hearing aids, the trial period allows you to tell us how the aids are working for you in different situations and we can change them to fix your problems. Unfortunately, wearing a new hearing aid, especially for first-time hearing aid user is not as simple as just "putting them in your ears and away you go", you need time to adjust to the new sounds, your brain needs time to catch up and we both need time to set the hearing aids to be perfect for you as you adjust to new sounds.

  • After Care

We will support you with your new hearing aid. Feel free to come back to see us if there are any problems, if for example, you are hearing great in most places but you are struggling in your new favourite restaraunt, we can set up a different mode on your hearing aid just for the restaraunt. Come back to see us if your hearing aid needs a clean or if you feel you aren't hearing as well as you should be.
