Siemens / Signia Hearing Aids

Incredible Hearing Technology

Hearing Devices From Siemens / Signia

Siemens is a well-known German company and their hearing aid division is one of the largest manufacturers of hearing aids worldwide. They have recently sold their hearing aid division to a private consortium named Sivantos. Sivantos have not rested on their laurels, they quickly introduced the Binax and then Primax powered range of hearing aids which have amazed the hearing aid profession. Sivantos have now changed their hearing aid brand to Signia but they are still dual branded Siemens. This is something that will slowly change over the next couple of years.

Although you would expect a well-known company like Siemens to have dominated the hearing aid market. However, they have had their ups and downs over the years. They had some problems a couple of years ago with feedback suppression issues and many Independent hearing healthcare professionals moved to other brands. With the launch of the Micon platform, it seemed that they had put some of their problems behind them and they were back on track. The launch of the Binax range which has been clinically proven to perform better than normal hearing has really cemented their growth as it has been amazingly well received by users and professionals alike. Their newest platform the Primax is now labelled as a Signia platform, however, it has built on the foundations of the Binax and is considered an outstanding option.

Siemens / Sivantos offer their hearing aids in a similar way to Phonak, they name their hearing aid types differently and use a numeral to signify the technology level. For instance, the Primax platform (chipset) is split into three technology levels, the 7 at the top, through 5 to 3 at the bottom. The hearing aids types are called Insio for custom hearing aids, Motion for BTE hearing aids and just to confuse everyone they have three different RIC / RITE hearing aid types called Pure, Carat, Cellion and Ace. Believe me, even professionals have a hard time keeping up.

Are Signia Hearing Aids Any Good?

That is really what it comes down to, are hearing aids from Signia actually any good? I would have to say going on all of the available evidence that they are. At least, from what I have heard from both hearing aid professionals and users. There is one caveat here, all that I have heard about is the Primax 7px and 5px hearing aids. Anything I have heard has been excellent, users are really happy with the devices.

Amazing Innovation, Fine Tuning of Hearing Aids Remotely

Sivantos have proved themselves to be as innovative as any other manufacturer, they have recently introduced two major new innovations. Their rechargeable hearing aids will now use Lithium-ion technology which will give professionals the confidence to recommend them. Secondly, they have introduced an app that will allow deeper collaboration between users and professionals. The app is quite amazing and has a lot to offer. One of the biggest things is remote fine-tuning of hearing aids or telehealth. This is truly a groundbreaking innovation and we believe that all of the manufacturers can be expected to follow. It will mean that users will no longer have to physically attend the office for changes to their hearing instruments, something that many will be thankful for. So without any further babble, let's take a look at their stuff.

Signia

Insio Primax Silk

Signia have had instant fit custom hearing aids in the past, however, they say that Silk is the first completely-in-the-canal (CIC) hearing aid that’s both almost invisible and ready to wear. The device is a new offering on their latest primax chipset and is designed to fit up to 80% of all ear canals. While the device is labelled a CIC, for some lucky people it is actually an invisible hearing aid.

The device is a modular type hearing aid that uses a flexible Click Sleeve to provide an immediate and comfortable fit. There are several sizes of click sleeves to fit as many ears as possible.

Signia Silk Primax

Instant Fit Invisible Hearing Aid (almost)

The Click Sleeves are made of soft silicone and are available in six different types which allow the device to fit in the majority of ear canals and to fit the majority of hearing losses. With the right Click Sleeve in place the hearing aid sits quite deep in the canal making the device either invisible or almost invisible.

Because Silk is powered by Signia’s Primax platform, users of the device can benefit from all of the outstanding features of that platform including their binaural OneMic directionality system and all of the other features that the Primax chipset offers. The device is also wireless so you can use your smartphone to adjust your hearing aids via the Signia touchControl™ app, and wirelessly stream virtually any audio device with the optional easyTek™ accessory.

The Latest Made For iPhone Hearing Aids

Signia is the latest hearing aid brand to introduce a Made For iPhone hearing aid to their line-up. It is a very interesting device and it represents some real firsts for the hearing aid industry. It is based on the Pure RIC hearing aid types and we will deal with it separately and first because it is their latest offering.

Signia

Pure 13 BT Primax Hearing Aids

The Signia Pure® 13 BT px is their first ever Made For iPhone hearing aid technology. They say that it delivers uncompromising sound, industry-leading connectivity, and revolutionary remote hearing care, along with great battery life. Wearers will be fully connected to their environment, each other, their iPhone® and to their hearing care professional. The devices will be introduced worldwide in May 2017, they are based on the Primax platform and will be available in the usual three levels of technology.

The devices represent a few firsts for the industry, they will be the world’s first telehealth-supported hearing aid with iPhone audio streaming capabilities, the first hearing aid to use iPhone motion sensors to improve hearing in certain situations and the first hearing aid to provide both “high-definition binaural hearing” and Bluetooth® audio streaming (from a connected device). The devices will be powered by a size 13 battery which is good news for users, the 13 battery combined with the low energy use should mean fewer battery changes.

Pure 13 BT Primax Prices

We would expect the range to be sold at prices from £1200.00 to £2200.00 in the UK depending on the Practice and location. We would expect the range to be sold at prices from €1400.00 to €3000.00 in Ireland. We would expect the range to be sold at prices from $1400.00 to $3200.00 in the USA. Just to be clear, we don't set prices here and they differ from Practice to Practice across the World so our expectations aren't binding, they are just a guess and some research. Always remember, we all like to shop around, but always be clear about what is being delivered. You will need care and support, make sure you will get it. You will also need your hearing aid validated or verified to get the best experience, paying a little more to ensure your experience is good, is not wasted money. That's our price rant for the day over, let's talk about the devices.

Signia Pure 13 BT

As with all Made For iPhone hearing aids the Signia Pure® 13 BT will stream audio directly from iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch devices. It will use the Bluetooth® low energy (LE) standard. This will enable high fidelity stereo streaming with reduced energy consumption. Signia have also retained their own wireless radio on the devices, which means that when you are streaming audio, you don't lose the benefit of the ear 2 ear communication. This is important for the user, Signia’s ear-to-ear (e2e™) wireless system is used to provide better spatial awareness and speech understanding.

Motion Detection

People frequently move while they are speaking, and Signia thinks that their hearing aids should react dynamically and adjust to their changing listening situation. The Pure® 13 BT is the first hearing aid to utilize the iPhone motion sensors to deliver input that allows adjustments in sound processing based on your activities. Signia say that the devices understand when a user is in motion and for the first time ever this data will allow them to deliver optimal hearing in that situation.

Pure 13 BT Connectivity

Essentially when a wearer is walking, running or driving, the hearing aids understand they are in motion, and will automatically adjust to better hear a conversation partner at their side or from the back while maintaining awareness of environmental sounds like sirens, approaching vehicles, or pedestrians. Signia claims that motion detection will make their environmental classification system even more robust, by adding a valuable data point. I can not fault them here, it is an outstanding idea and a sign of real innovation.

Signia AppCompanion App

The new myControl™ App is made specifically for Pure 13 BT hearing aids. It offers a range of advantages beyond direct streaming of audio. It acts as a remote control for quick and easy changes to settings like volume and programs, and delivers advanced adjustment options to the user for personalization of sound.

The new app will allow you to make personalized adjustments to programs, volume, microphone directionality, and treble/bass, during audio streaming. Pure 13 BT hearing aids will help users look after their hearing health. Similar to a fitness tracker, they create a personal sound profile over time based on noise exposure, so you can protect your hearing health.

The app tracks your daily noise exposure and displays the information in an easily readable way. This is an interesting little datum point, it will allow you to understand what levels of noise you are exposing yourself to on a daily basis allowing you to understand the possibilities of damaging your hearing through noise exposure.

Telecare 2.0

The Pure® 13 BT is the first Signia hearing aid to utilize TeleCare 2.0. This upgrade introduces additional capabilities such as advanced data logging, secure end-to-end encrypted data transfer, and improved remote hearing aid adjustments. The professional can now adjust your hearing aids remotely across four frequency bands (previously only gain and tone control were available to providers). The user will interact with your provider via the Signia myHearing App, which is available for both iPhone and Android smartphones.

The binaxHearing Aid Range

The feedback from wearers of Binax hearing aids is really excellent and the clinical results that Siemens have produced really do speak for themselves. They have claimed that the hearing devices will help hearing impaired people hear better than normal hearing people in noise. A claim like that has never been heard before, and if anyone else than Siemens made it, it would be treated with caution. With the introduction of binax technology, Siemens introduces binaural processing to the Siemens range of hearing aids for the first time.

Binaural hearing is how we naturally hear, binaural hearing increases loudness, enhances clarity, and gives sound added richness and quality. But the benefits of binaural hearing deteriorate with age and hearing loss. Binax, the next generation of Siemen's BestSound® Technology is designed to simulate the effects of binaural hearing and brings these advantages back to the user. It is so powerful that Siemens say for the first time, wearers with a well-fit pair of binax hearing instruments can understand speech in demanding environments even better than people with normal hearing.*

You can see the binax range below and the accompanying equipments and apps.

Hear 25% better than people with normal hearing

Hear 25% Better Than Normal Hearing People In Noise

Hearing technology that is clinically proven to outperform normal hearing in demanding listening environments*. binax is the next generation of BestSound Technology that enables wearers to achieve up to 25% better speech recognition than individuals with normal hearing in challenging listening environments like restaurants and cocktail parties*. **Studies conducted at University of Northern Colorado (2014) and Oldenburg Horzentrum (2013) showed that Speech Reception Thresholds (SRT) in cocktail-party situations improved up to 2.9 dB for wearers with mild to moderate hearing loss using binax with Narrow Directionality, compared to people with normal hearing. This corresponds to over 25% improvement in speech understanding.

For the first time ever, experience hearing aids that solve the two most common hearing aid complaints.

*Hearing in demanding environments like restaurants, cocktail parties, or the car.
*Hearing in windy environments like the golf course or on a boat.
**Hearing aid owners are more likely to have more difficulty hearing in noise (66% “quite difficult” to “extremely difficult”, versus 34%, “somewhat difficult” to “slightly difficult”) – MarkeTrak VIII: 25-Year Trends in the Hearing Health Market, October 2009.

Siemens Binax 7

The Siemens Binax 7 is the highest level of technology in the Binax range. It contains 48 processing channels for improving sound quality and a greater number of features than the Binax 5 which enable it to be more refined and fine-tuned for your needs. The full range of models are available from the smallest "in the ear" to full size "behind the ear" models and all are suitable for mild to severe hearing loss.

Of the three RIC (Receiver in canal) models available, the larger two, the Carat and the Pure have a rechargeable battery option and contain more features than the Ace, which is significantly smaller and more discrete. There are also custom models available

Main features

48 channels

The Binax 7 has a whopping 48 channels. This is a lot more than any other hearing aid in existence. Most top end aids have either 17 or 18 channels. Audiologists are undecided at the moment as to whether all these extra channels provide an additional benefit or not as the human cochlear only contains 20 natural channels, around 17 or 18 of which are used in a practical way. Either way, if you are looking for the hearing aid with the most channels, this is it.

Binaxfocus including spatial speech focus

If you go into a noisy environment, the hearing aids will automatically track the levels of background noise and work out where the speech sounds near to you are coming from. The hearing aids then work together by communicating wirelessly so that they can focus the hearing aids towards the speech sounds so that you can hear the person you are talking to rather than the background noise around you. If you want to focus on a specific speaker, you can manually focus your hearing in that direction using your remote control (for example, focus hearing to your right if you are sat on the end in a restaurant and want to hear the person next to you whilst still facing forward)

Binaxsound

BinaxSound gives the hearing aids HD (High Definition) sound quality. Both hearing aids share the sound between the microphones which creates a virtual network of eight microphones to pick up the sounds around you. An example of how this works is that if speech sounds coming in from your left are being picked up by your left aid more clearly, it will transfer the sound to both ears so that you can hear them in stereo rather than from just that one side.

Binaxguide

BinaxGuide lets you manually change the direction of the microphones are focusing in to either front, back, left or right. This can be useful for car journeys if you need to face forwards but the passenger is to your side. To home in on their voice, you can use your remote control to tell the aids to listen in that direction.

e2e Wireless

Siemens e2e Wireless technology (e2e stands for ear to ear) allows your left and right aids to collect sound and send it to each other. This enables all of the above features to function.

Other features

eWindscreen binaural

This program cuts down the effect of wind noise on the hearing aids when you are outside. If you have two aids, they work together so that if the wind is affecting one side, the other side is made clearer to compensate.

Sound Smoothing

Basically if you're in the kitchen and someone drops a plate on the floor you are less likely to jump out of your skin as the hearing aid reacts immediately to loud and unexpected sounds and softens them.

Tinnitus masking program

The audiologist can run some tests to find the frequency of your tinnitus and a personalised program of sounds can be set up to help to lessen the effects of your tinnitus.

Feedback Cancellation

The screeching sound that you get from your hearing aid when your ear gets too near to the side of your chair or you hug someone? This feature gets rid of that before it happens.

SoundBrilliance

This enables Bluetooth streaming using the easyTek sound streamer and your remote control. Stream sounds directly from your phone or TV.

Spatial Configurator

Using the app you can download on your Android or Apple smartphone you can have full control over your hearing aid. You can control the volume as well as individually altering bass and treble. The program can be changed, your hearing can be focused in a particular direction and you can fine tune each program's settings easily and discretely.

Siemens Binax 5

The Binax 5 technology level is available in a full range of hearing aid models including invisible in the canal (IIC). This is a complete range from the very small in-the-ear aids through to the full sized behind-the-ear models although they are named differently, you can read more about the models below.

Main features

Binaxfocus

BinaxFocus automatically changes the focus of the directional microphones from wide to narrow, depending on your environment to give you better speech understanding. You can also control this feature manually to focus on a certain speaker or sound in your environment.

Binaxsound

BinaxSound gives you High Definition or "HD" Sound quality by sharing the sound between two the microphones on each of the hearing aids. This creates a eight microphone virtual network for capturing the sound around you. If one hearing aid is getting a clearer speech signal, it can send this to both hearing aids at once.

Binaxguide

BinaxGuide changes the directionality characteristics of the microphones from focusing in front of you to behind you or to the side. This can also be changed manually and is perfect for car journeys when you cannot turn to face the speaker.

32 Channels

The Binax 5 contains 32 channels. This is far more than most other hearing aids and the jury is out at the moment on whether all those extra channels provide any additional benefit or not. The human cochlear only has 20 channels in it naturally, around 17 or 18 of which are used realistically. This is why most top hearing aids have around 17 or 18 channels.

e2e Wireless

Binax’s e2e Wireless technology allows two hearing aids to collect sound from one side and send it to the other, giving a binaural listening effect. It also ensures that all settings are synchronised and the hearing aids are working together.

Other features

eWindscreen

This program reduces the effect that wind noise has on sound quality when you are outside to help you hear those around you.

Sound Smoothing

This program helps to lessen the impact of sudden loud sounds, which can be a problem for hearing aid wearers. This program reduces the volume and softens the effect for listening comfort.

Tinnitus Noiser

This program produces a range of sounds to distract the wearer from the symptoms of tinnitus.

Feedback Cancellation

The whistling sound of feedback whenever something or someone gets too close to your hearing aid, is removed before you can hear it, without any sound distortion.

SoundBrilliance

Stream sound from your Bluetooth devices directly to your hearing aids via the easyTek sound streamer and remote control.

Spatial Configurator

This program gives the wearer total control over their listening in any situation. You can change the span of focus from wide to narrow so you can hear sounds from all around you or a small area in front of you. You can also change the direction of your hearing to the side or behind you. These hearing aids are controllable via the easyTek remote control and sound streamer or the easyTek app which is compatible with both iOS and Android Smartphones. The app allows you to adjust the volume, treble and bass as well as fine tune your program settings to each listening situation easily and discretely.

Binax 3

The Siemens Binax 3 is the entry level technology option in the Binax range. It is a 24 channel aid and it has less features than the Binax 5 or Binax 7 but uses the same base processing chip. All models are suitable all hearing loss apart from profound.

Main features

Binaxfocus

BinaxFocus focuses your hearing more tightly towards relevant speach sounds when you are in a noisy environment such as a restaurant.

Binaxsound

BinaxSound shares the incoming sounds between both hearing aids to provide HD (High Definition) sound quality.

24 Channels

The Binax 3 contains 24 channels which is more any other entry level hearing aid there is, and in fact more than most other hearing aids altogether. The Binax's way of using channels is different to other manufacturers however so this particular hearing aid shouldn't be compared to others on channels alone.

e2e Wireless

You get a binaural hearing effect by having the two hearing aids communicate wirelessly which means that your hearing aids work more naturally like your actual ears to process sounds together as one unit. e2e wireless is what powers the above features, binaxsound and binaxfocus.

Other features

eWindscreen

This feature attenuates the crackling sound you can get in your hearing aids when wind hits them.

Sound Smoothing

Sudden loud sounds are reduced before you hear them. The hearing aid reacts quickly so that sounds such as slamming doors are less jarring.

Tinnitus Noiser

The hearing aid can help to distract you from the sounds of your tinnitus by playing a range of sounds when you are in a quiet environment, which is often where you are more likely to notice your tinnitus.

Feedback Cancellation

The squealing sound of feedback tha t can happen when something gets too close to your aids is removed before you hear it. This is done without any distortion of sound quality.

Additionally, all Insio binax models, even the tiniest IICs (Invisible In Canal), are remotely controllable via the touchControl App. This makes Insio binax a nearly invisible solution with outstanding performance.

Siemens produce an extensive range of digital hearing aids for both adults and children. Siemens are the biggest hearing aid manufacturer in the world – one in every five hearing aids sold around the world is a Siemens product.

The hearing aids that they offer are grouped into three different categories: Ultimate, Value and Basic.

Ultimate

CENTRA™, CENTRA™ Active, CENTRA™ Life Dir

The Centra line is Siemens’ newest and most advanced hearing aid. It features sophisticated noise reduction, e2e wireless technology (see below), wind noise reduction and directional microphones.

ACURIS™, ACURIS™ Life

The Acuris models also feature e2e wireless. As well as that, they offer one touch control for manual adjustments: if you change the volume on one aid, they other adjusts itself automatically. A remote control can be optionally purchased with Acuris models to help you adjust your aids more easily and discreetly.

ARTIS™ with e2e wireless

This is the same as the Artis value range but with e2e wireless built in.

Value

ARTIS™ 2, ARTIS™, ARTIS™ Life

The Artis range offers twin directional microphones,  a telephone mode to make using the phone easier, an alert tone to notify that the aid’s battery needs replacing and all models in this range feature a special coating to repel rain, sweat and moisture. The Artis 2 has similar feature to the Centra models.

CIELO™, CIELO™ 2, CIELO™ Life

The Cielo models offer: adaptive directional microphones, speech and noise management, wind noise reduction and a n optional remote control. They also save data about how you use them; your audiologist can use this data to better adjust your Cielo aid to meet your hearing needs.

Basic

INTUIS™

The Intuis family features noise reduction and feedback cancellation. Most models offer directional microphones.

PHOENIX™, PHOENIX™ One

The Phoenix range is Siemens’ cheapest offering. It lacks many of the feature seen in the more advanced aid above.

e2e wireless technology

The e2e (ear-2-ear) system enables two digital hearing aids to act as one. It is very similar to Oticon’s Epoq technology. With e2e, your two hearing aids communicate with each other to produce a more natural sound – the two aids synchronise with each other, this helps you to better localise sounds.
