Foods That May Control Diabetes

Diabetes is increasingly being linked to hearing loss and the likelihood of someone with diabetes having hearing loss is dramatically increased. While we aren't quite sure why that is, it is thought that the damaging effect of high blood sugar on blood vessels combined with the damaging effect of diabetes on nerve endings may well be the underlying cause. At Hearing Aid Know we hear from more and more people with both hearing loss and diabetes and we felt that it makes perfect sense to undertake articles that offer information to them about more than just hearing loss, so we were happy when Jennifer D'Souza approached us with a guest article on foodstuffs that can help control diabetes. Without further adieu, I will hand her over to you.

List of Food which helps in Controlling Diabetes

Diabetes is a disorder in which the body doesn’t produce insulin or doesn’t use it properly resulting in high blood sugar levels. Because of this condition, the body cells do not get enough sugar from the blood leading to a high level of blood sugar. This is one of the major problems suffered across the world. In your blood, a sugar compound is present which is known as Glucose, and it is one of the primary energy sources for the body. When there is a lack of insulin or resistance to insulin, this will lead to increased blood sugar level. Thus, people are prone to suffer from many other health problems due to this high blood sugar level.

There are three types of diabetes namely

  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Gestational diabetes
  •

Thus, people with diabetes suffer from many issues such as frequent urination, dry and itching skin, slow-healing wounds, blurry kind of vision and drowsiness, etc. To treat this condition, people are searching for many natural remedies and food diet as well. Here we will discuss 7 foods that will help to control blood sugar:

Omega-3 Rich Fish

Fish is one of the primary foods that help to decrease the symptoms of diabetes condition because of its high levels of omega-3. Some of the fish varieties that have abundant omega-3 fatty acids include salmon, sardines, herring, anchovies, and mackerel.  In addition to omega-3, fish is rich in DHA and EPA, which will help to protect the cells lining the blood vessels.  Diabetes will lead to severe risks such as heart disease and stroke. Thus to help avoid this significant problem, eating fish rich in DHA and EPA will improve the functioning of arteries.

According to the study, it was found out that people who eat fatty fish have a lower risk of heart disease and stroke. Thus, eating oily fish will help in a great way to treat these severe conditions. As fish is one of the great sources of protein, it also increases your metabolic rate.

Leafy Greens

Leafy green vegetables are excellent sources of vitamins and minerals that will help to cut the diabetes symptoms. Leafy greens are low in carbohydrates, and thus they are healthy and delicious to have. Spinach, kale and other greens are rich in vitamin C. According to the study, vitamin C will decrease the inflammatory markers and decrease blood sugar levels for those suffering from type 2 diabetes or high BP.

In addition to being rich in vitamins and minerals, green leafy veggies are also sources of antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin.  One of the significant diabetes symptoms includes problems with vision, and by consuming these leafy greens, one can protect their eyes from macular degeneration and cataracts.

Flavorful, Low-Calorie Drinks

Plain water is good for diabetes patients, and the water mixed with fruits and vegetables are better. You can try a lemon or cucumber in your water instead of sugar-rich drinks. Some people don't like to have hot tea, for them they can try cold brew added with lemon or cinnamon stick. As cinnamon is a spice rich in antioxidants, it will help to lower blood sugar levels naturally and improve insulin.

Melon or Berries

Though they are more expensive, melons or berries are packed with enough nutrients and fibres to help with diabetes. You can try the melon or berries with plain yogurt to get more nutrients. It was found out that eating 1 cup of either melon or berries contain just 15 grams of carbohydrates.

Eggs

Eggs have many health benefits. People who will consume eggs regularly, help to treat severe heart diseases. Eggs will help to decrease the inflammation and thus take care of insulin sensitivity. Eggs will help to increase your good HDL cholesterol and thus reduce the bad LDL cholesterol.

Broccoli

Broccoli is another vegetable rich in vitamin C and antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin. Not only these nutrients but also has magnesium, which improves metabolism. Eating half a cup of cooked broccoli will help you to get 27 calories and 3 grams of digestible carbohydrates. According to research in diabetes, it was found that broccoli will decrease insulin levels to protect cells during metabolism.

Garlic

Garlic is one of the natural ingredients added to flavour food. But some people suffering from diabetes don’t like to eat garlic, which will not help them to treat the diabetes condition. Garlic will even treat the high Blood Pressure condition. One piece of raw garlic will give you 4 calories and just 1 gram of carbohydrates.

Conclusion

By consuming a few of the foods mentioned above, you can able to treat the worst condition of diabetes. Managing diabetes is necessary, as otherwise will lead to serious health issues, particularly heart disease and stroke.
